Cowan was the initial caddie Woods hired when he made his professional debut in the 1996 Greater Milwaukee Open. He doesn't remember which round, or perhaps what hole these were on, the club selection from the tee.
``It was his stinger, his 2-iron,'' Cowan said, looking around until he locked his eyes for the waist-high mesh throughout the practice green at Sherwood Country Club. ``It didn't hardly defeat that green net. LaCava, hired by Woods in October, had spent time throughout the 14-time major champion during his 20 years for the bag with Fred Couples, with whom Woods often played.
However, a 3-wood on the par-5 15th at Royal Melbourne in the Presidents Cup got his attention, and several weeks later, he still had trouble describing what he saw.
``He hit it a manner which it was trajecting similar to this,'' LaCava, using his hand to indicate a designated line with the slightest downward arc. ``But it was not coming down. It wasn't rising, either. It's difficult to describe. It absolutely was gaining speed, however it Mizuno MP 58 irons wasn't going up. Then I figured, `This guy is making the ball take action I've never witnessed anybody else do.' I needed never witnessed a trajectory this way on the 3-wood, or some other shot.''
LaCava said the pin was cut in the front Mizuno Mp-63 irons right portion of the green, and also the ball finally stopped inside back left corner. The shot was in to the wind, and in firm conditions, anf the husband estimates it went less than 270 yards.
Just then, Woods walked high on the discussion. And when he sensed the conversation ending, he said, ``Keep going.''
``Look at that little grin on his face,'' LaCava said. ``He knows what I'm discussing. But he won't say anything about this.''
