Conditions for the final two rounds were challenging. As I said before, the Champion course at PGA National is a strong test of golf and with the wind gusting at 20 mph-plus on both days, there were some tough holes out there … especially on Jack Nicklaus’ infamous Bear Ping G15 Hybrids Trap. I played better than I scored, which has been a familiar and at the same time frustrating story these past 12 months, but I have to continue to focus on the positives. My game is in pretty good shape overall. From what I saw of Tiger playing with him in that final round on Sunday, I’d say the same about him. To me, it looked like the old Tiger. He never missed a shot or made a bad swing all day.
Anyway, this time last year I was defending champion going into Doral, so to miss out on the tournament altogether is extremely disappointing. I’ll stay busy this week, though. I can work hard on my game here at the Bear’s Club. I also need to catch up with the guys at the Els for Autism Foundation as we are holding the fourth annual Els for Autism Pro-Am next Monday, March 12. Obviously looking forward to that and I know we’re going to get a lot of Ping K15 Hybrids support again from many of my fellow TOUR professionals. More of that on the website later this week.
Also, we’ve had some of the kids from the Ernie Els & Fancourt Foundation over from South Africa this past week. I was able to spend a little bit of time with them at The Honda Classic and I’ll make sure I catch up with them again before they head home.
Dylan Raubenheimer, Shaun Smith, Izel Pieters and Mojalefa Xaba have all worked hard and achieved great things in their time at the Foundation and they absolutely deserved this trip. Shaun was the Foundation’s outstanding golfer in 2011 and only last week made it to the semifinal of the South African Amateur Championship. Also that same week Dylan won the Proudfoot Trophy, awarded to the leading scorer over the 36-hole stroke-play qualifying stages. Izel and Mojalefa have been doing great in school and on discount golf clubs the golf course, too. I’m proud of every one of them
The four of them stopped off in New York on the way and then spent the weekend at The Honda Classic, which was a fantastic way for them to enhance their golfing education and experience what goes on behind the scenes at a professional tournament. I also want to thank the Golf Channel. They really looked after the kids and gave them a slot on television, which I know was a big thrill for all of them.
